The Arms of The Sunbury Urban District Council

The Society was founded in 1951 to foster interest in local history, particularly of our own area, namely Shepperton, Sunbury, Charlton, Littleton, and Halliford, both Upper and Lower. Members are encouraged to research the past and also to record the present for the benefit of future generations.

Short articles of research are published in the Society’s twice-yearly Journal (free to members). Longer pieces of research are published in book form: at present there are more than 20 publications. The Society has some 200 members, most living locally.

The society’s financial year is the calendar year and annual subscriptions, due 1st. January, are as follows

Individual £7.00

Family £12.00

About 90 people attend monthly meetings held from September to May. Meetings are held mainly in The John Crook Theatre, Halliford School Russell Road Shepperton by kind permission of the head master and governors, although the September meeting is held at an alternative venue in Sunbury.

At these meetings there are speakers on general topics of local history. There are also summer activities. Not all members want to be involved in research, they join to attend the talks and take part in the occasional outings.

The Society has an archive of old photographs, maps, documents etc; some of which are exhibited at local events. We are happy to try to answer questions about the history of our area, use the contact link above to reach us.
